PATIENT PREPARATION

No special preparation is needed for a CBCT scan however, for your safety and to ensure we get the best possible image, please remove all metal head and neck jewelry:

  • Earrings
  • Necklaces
  • Hair Clips
  • Nose, lip and tongue studs, rings or jewelry of any kind.

The x-ray technician may ask you to remove dentures or other appliances, however, please bring all items to your appointment. The technician may be required to incorporate them into your scan.

During the scanning procedure you will be required to sit or stand in a normal postion with your chin resting on a chin support. At this time you will need to keep still for approximately 10-20 seconds, the duration of the scan.

It is possible that your dentist will ask you to wear a plastic stent called a radiographic guide during the scan. If you were given a guide, please remember to bring it to your appointment as we will not be able to carry out the scan without it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

What is a CBCT scan?

CBCT, or Cone Beam Computed Tomography, is a filmless, digital x-ray scanner specifically designed for scanning the teeth and jaws. The scanner rotates 360° around you in a matter of seconds. The x-ray technology is similar to the type used in panoramic machines. The images generated can be presented as 2D or 3D images.

Is a CBCT better than regular dental x-rays?

A single CBCT scan provides more anatomically and dimensionally accurate information than can be obtained with traditional 2D based dental x-rays.

Why do I need a CBCT Scan?

Your dentist has referred you to Orbit Imaging Centres to obtain a CBCT study to better diagnose and treat your unique dental needs. Your dentist knows that Orbit provides:

  • Technologically advanced, low dose 3D CBCT scans.
  • Fast turnaround at competitive fees.
  • Professional, highly trained staff.

How does a CBCT Scan assist my dentist or specialist?

CBCT scanning allows your dental professional to:

  • Visualize and analyze the orientation and position of anatomical structures and pathology that cannot be viewed externally or with conventional 2D x-rays.
  • Accurately plan individualized treatments including dental implants and other surgical procedures.
  • Prepare necessary guided treatment aids.

What dental treatments are CBCT scans useful for?

CBCT scans are used for:

  • Implant planning
  • Orthodontic diagnosis and treatment
  • Sinus and airway evaluations
  • Impacted and supernumerary teeth
  • Endodontic (root canal) evaluation
  • Oral surgery and tooth removal
  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) analysis
  • Jaw pathology
  • Periodontal disease

How much radiation exposure will I receive?

The effective dose received from CBCT depends on the type of scan you will receive. It typically ranges from 5 uSv to 80 uSv or approximately the equivalent of 1 to 10 days of natural background exposure. CBCT dose is similar to a standard complete dental series and far less than a medical CT.

Orbit prides itself in providing the lowest dose scanning technology available and will provide you with a fact sheet about radiation exposure upon request.

COSTS AND INSURANCE COVERAGE

How much does a CBCT scan cost?

CBCT fees range in price depending on the number and type of scan requested and the reporting requirements ordered by your doctor. Consult our Imaging Services & Fees for more pricing details.
